Honoring Local Heroes: The All Wars Museum at the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Home

The All Wars Museum at the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Home is more than just a building with military memorabilia. It's a place that honors the men and women from the area who have served our country. When you visit, you'll feel a deep sense of gratitude and pride for our country and the sacrifices of our military.
The museum is located inside the main entrance gates, next to a serene lake, and it showcases a collection of military vehicles, including a helicopter and a battle tank. Inside, the exhibits take you through the history of American wars, from early encounters with Native Americans to present-day conflicts in the Middle East. The displays include historical references, artifacts, and personal perspectives of America’s war history.

The collection features personal and unique items donated by local people, such as uniforms, flags, military equipment, newspaper stories, telegrams, personal letters, photographs, and art. The volunteer tour guides, many of whom are veterans, are knowledgeable and offer a warm welcome to visitors of all ages.

The heart of the collection includes over 60 oil-painting portraits by Marine Corps Veteran Dan Waggoner, as well as historically accurate replicas and dioramas by Army Veteran Joe Laratta. The museum curator, Bob Craig, a Marine Corps Veteran, has created large murals and tiny replicas of armament, soldiers, and military vehicles.

The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm, and on Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm. It is closed for lunch from 12 pm to 1 pm and on July 4. The museum is located just inside the main gates, and visitors can park in the first lot and use the handicapped accessible sidewalk to reach the museum’s front doors.

For more information or to volunteer at the museum, you can call 217-222-8641.
