Karl Warma, a seasoned art educator, is completing his 19th year at Quincy University, where he has become known for inspiring students through a wide range of art courses. At QU, Karl has the unique opportunity to teach subjects such as Drawing, Illustration, Mixed Media Painting, Photography, Art History and Aesthetics. This diverse course load allows Karl to offer fresh challenges and opportunities each semester, providing a dynamic learning environment for his students.

One of Karl's favorite aspects of teaching is introducing students to the world of art. "I love teaching introductory courses, regardless of the medium," he says. "Bringing students back to art and empowering them to participate in a creative environment is not only refreshing for them but also culturally significant." Karl believes that engaging students early in their academic journey is essential for sparking creativity and developing critical thinking skills, making art an important foundation for their broader educational experiences.

The Transformative Power of Art in Education and Society

Karl believes that the visual arts are vital in education and society today, drawing inspiration from the philosophy of pragmatist thinker John Dewey. He explains, "Dewey stated that art is the most important creation of humankind. He believed it not only frees us from the monotony of daily life but also reshapes our understanding of reality, offering new visions and possibilities. Art is about remaking reality one creative expression at a time." Through his teaching, Karl fosters the transformative power of art, helping students engage with new ways of seeing the world around them.

In addition to nurturing creativity, Karl’s teaching approach ensures that students not only develop technical skills but also gain a deep understanding of art’s cultural and historical significance. He encourages students to think critically, explore new perspectives and engage
with the world through their creative work. Karl’s passion for art and its role in society shines through in every lesson, empowering his students to become thoughtful, creative individuals ready to contribute meaningfully to the world.
