Civil War Symposium V in October

The Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County and Tri-States Civil War Round Table are co-sponsoring the fifth Civil War Symposium on October 4 and 5 at the Kroc Center, 405 Vermont St., Quincy. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
A varied program will be offered with five guest speakers and includes topics like Mary Todd Lincoln’s mental health to General U.S. Grant, Logan and McClernand, three well-known Illinois generals who were involved in the war. Also the private and military life of Albert Sidney Johnston and reflections of Illinois riverboat captain Harry Detweiller. Lastly how Grant saved Lee after Appomattox.
​​Speakers include Dr. Harry Laver, Brian “Fox” Ellis, Dr. Curt Fields, Dr. Timothy B. Smith and Dr. Sam Wheeler.
Friday's events begin at 7 pm and Saturday will start at 9 am. Early bird presentations are to be determined.

Copies of the presenters’ books will be for sale at the event with a book signing. The Friends of the Quincy Public Library will offer used volumes at reduced prices for attendees.

Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony Oct. 5 at Woodland
In conjunction with Civil War Symposium V, the HSQAC and the Captain Elijah Smith Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will dedicate a new marker honoring Governor John Wood's father, Dr. Daniel Wood who was a regimental surgeon in George Washington’s army and was present at the Crossing at Delaware and the Battle of Monmouth. 
This event will take place in Woodland Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 3 pm. Participants will include members of the Sons of the American Revolution, Cleve Barkley who will speak about Wood and the Honor Guard from Legion Post #37 who will perform military honors.
